What do you believe is your responsibility to this moment in history?

What has been clear over the past year and a half is that when you stand by and hope for things to go the way you want them to, they don’t. It’s your proactiveness and your voice, paired with a mentality to do more for the people around you that turns hope into reality. It’s my responsibility to this moment in history to give a voice to those that haven’t had one and to be consistent in the pursuit of turning people’s hopes into reality through constant advocation of what’s right, fair, and equal – particularly for those who have experienced systemic discrimination in the workplace their entire life.

 Since 2018, Andrew Yoshimura has worked for a certified LGBT-owned company that has been at the forefront of new legislation being passed to establish a procurement goal for LGBT businesses providing service to California utility companies. Their goal has always been to lead the fight for this new legislation for the greater community. When diversity and equality are the top priority for a company, everyone wins. The communities served, the individuals employed and the beacon of hope represented are more important now more than ever. 

Andrew has been leading the charge in these efforts, along with many others, as a founder of BuildOUT CA, a board member of the San Diego Equality Business Association and a member of the San Diago Mayor’s LGBT advisory committee, as well as an executive leader at Pride Resource Partners. The impact of new legislation to establish an LGBT procurement goal in California will set the high bar for the rest of the nation with regard to diversity and equality in business.
